April Is Canine Fitness Month!

The month of April is Canine Fitness Month – a whole month dedicated to raising awareness how the importance of keeping dogs fit and physically active! Dogs who gain too much weight can suffer from a wide range of related health problems, including but not limited to difficulty breathing, sore joints, canine diabetes, and a higher risk of cancer.

How Can I Help My Dog Stay Fit And Healthy?

It’s your job to take care of your four-legged friend! This means helping your dog to stay physically active and healthy. How? Well, first, check with your veterinarian to learn if your dog is healthy enough for exercise. If they aren’t, your vet will be able to make recommendations for how to correct this.

Otherwise, here are some tips for how to keep your dog active.

Go For A Walk

This is perhaps the most obvious answer, but it’s a good one. Get out in the fresh air and take a walk together. It’ll be good for the both of you!

Active Playtime

You can also encourage your pet to be more active by engaging in active playtime. Play fetch with a stick or a frisbee. If your dog isn’t used to playing fetch, try using a ball that dispenses treats. It’ll interest them in retrieving the ball and eventually they’ll learn that returning the ball may result in more treats.

Hide Treats

You can associate treats with activity by playing hide and seek with their favorite treats. Place a treat behind a door, under a bowl, or under a piece of furniture they can move under.

Make An Obstacle Course

This fun activity can be done year-round – inside or out! You don’t even need equipment. You can use your own furniture. Lead them through it for a fun and engaging task.
