Happy October – Happy Adopt-A-Dog Month

October has arrived at long last, and we know that many of you are looking forward to seasonally appropriate celebrations and other pass times. Here at Gresham Animal Hospital, though, we ask that you consider over this month giving a dog a much-needed home.

Are you ready to provide companionship for an animal in need and receive companionship in return? Do you want to potentially save an animal by giving them their forever home? Consider adopting a dog! October is, as recognized by both the American Humane Association (AHA) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), national Adopt-A-Dog month. In particular, the ASPCA encourages people to adopt dogs from shelters.

Shelters routinely struggle with overpopulation issues. They simply can’t house all of the stray dogs they come across. With their limited funding, they can also only afford to take care of so many strays. As many as 20% of shelter dogs get euthanized because of these issues. If you choose to adopt a shelter dog you are, in a very real way, saving a life. You’re helping to fight overpopulation and you’ll gain and companion who you will cherish for years and years to come.

Spread The Word About Adopt-A-Dog Month

Even if you yourself cannot provide a home for a shelter dog, we urge Gresham locals to spread the word about Adopt-A-Dog Month. The more people know about the issues dogs in shelters face, the more chance those dogs will find their forever homes.

Another way to save local shelter dogs and other animals is to donate to your local shelters. Check in with shelters in your area, find out what they need and if they are taking donations. You could make a real difference by donating to a Gresham shelter today!
